在计划写这本书的时候，我脑海里浮现了1966年某仲夏日我痛下决心要学英文的情景。
When I was planning to write this book, I had in my mind a summer day in 1966 when I was determined to learn English.
当时，我刚从高中毕业进入大学念书，懵懂的我不知该如何面临未来四年大学生活的挑战，所幸，在同班同学曹近曦的鼓励下，我誓言要学好英文。
At that time, I just graduated from high school and went to university. I didn’t know how to face the challenges of college life in the next four years. Fortunately, with the encouragement of my classmate Cao Jinxi, I vowed to learn English well.
曹同学大学联考，其英文考了98分，他从五岁起就与美籍家庭来往，练就一口流利到连老外都听不出有外国口音的英语。
Cao got 98 points in the college entrance examination. Since he was five years old, he has been in contact with American families, and he has become so fluent that even foreigners can’t hear English with a foreign accent.
他就是我的榜样！为使自己能把英语学得与他一样好，我就请教他学习的秘诀。他说了下面这样的话：
He is my example! In order to learn English as well as him, I asked him the secret of learning English. He said the following:
“要学好英语，就要先懂得说莽语，也就是要把自己想像成新生儿，一切从头开始牙牙学语。”
“If you want to learn English well, you must first know how to speak mang language, that is, you must think of yourself as a newborn and learn to speak from the beginning.”
听了他这一席话，我笃信不疑，因为我们今天能流利地说写中文，不也是从婴儿时期开始牙牙学语而成的吗？
After listening to what he said, I have no doubt, because we can speak and write Chinese fluently today. Didn’t we learn to speak from our infancy?
当今的教学系统太过注重考试，太强调文法，以致台湾的学生每天都只是被强迫看枯燥的英文文章，纵使学了六年的中学英语，遇到老外却是哑巴一个，说不出一个字。
Today’s teaching system pays too much attention to examinations and grammar, so that students in Taiwan are forced to read boring English articles every day. Even though they have studied English for six years in middle schools, they are dumb and unable to speak a word when they meet foreigners.
几年前，我曾到埃及观光。当地的孩童几乎各个都可用英语与我交谈。
I visited Egypt a few years ago. Almost all the local children can talk to me in English.
他们之所以会说英语，全因学校的英语教育很注重听与说的技巧。
The reason why they can speak English is that the school English education pays attention to listening and speaking skills.
这些孩子学会了基本口语之后，便利用假日与游客作小贩生意。时间一久，他们的英语能力自然也就突飞猛进，我个人学习英文口语的过程亦大致相同，即勤说，勤说，勤说！
After learning the basic spoken language, these children make use of their holidays to do hawker business with tourists. After a long time, their English ability will naturally improve by leaps and bounds. My personal learning process of oral English is roughly the same, that is, speaking frequently, speaking frequently!
话说1966年那个仲夏日，我在曹同学的陪伴下到台北市重庆南路某书店买了一本《中美五周会话》。
On that Midsummer Day in 1966, accompanied by my classmate Cao, I went to a bookstore on Chongqing South Road in Taipei City and bought a copy of the five week conversation between China and the United States.
这本书是内容极为简单的英语会话书。每一课只有三四句对话。
This book is a very simple English conversation book. There are only three or four dialogues in each lesson.
当时我英文程度很差，却也能大致看得懂会话内容。买下此书之后，我就猛啃。
At that time, I was poor in English, but I could understand the conversation. After I bought the book, I chewed it.
熟悉基本句型后，我就随时随地背诵。周日外出时，我就到处寻找有老外出没的地方（如教会、美侨社区等），见到老外就主动搭讪。

professional English learning
When I am familiar with the basic sentence patterns, I will recite them anytime and anywhere. When I go out on Sundays, I look everywhere for places where foreigners come and go (such as churches, American communities, etc.), and when I see foreigners, I take the initiative to chat up with them.
说错话、用错字而令老外听不懂的情形是常有的事，但我不害羞，也不退缩。
It’s common for foreigners to say wrong words and use wrong words, but I’m not shy and I don’t shrink back.
就这样我讲英语的机会愈来愈多，也给我更多的机会活用书中的基本会话句型，英语能力的进步当然是可预期的事。
In this way, I have more and more opportunities to speak English, and also give me more opportunities to use the basic conversational sentence patterns in the book. Of course, the progress of my English ability is predictable.
数年后，我能高分通过托福考试赴美公费留学，全是这个时期打下的基础。
A few years later, I can pass the TOEFL test with high scores and go to the United States to study at public expense, which is the foundation laid by this period.
33年后的今天，我已是英语教学的工作者。
Today, 33 years later, I am a teacher of English.
回首我学习英语的过程，忍不住要专为想从头学好英语的人士编写一本基础会话书，期望鼓励这些人彻底走一趟我曾经历过的学习过程，打下踏实的英语基础，而通向精通英文的殿堂。
Looking back on my English learning process, I can’t help but write a basic conversation book for those who want to learn English from the beginning. I hope to encourage these people to go through the learning process I have experienced, lay a solid foundation in English, and lead to the palace of mastering English.
在这样的心情感召之下，我与常春藤的同仁就策划编写这本书。
Inspired by this mood, my Ivy colleagues and I planned to write this book.

作者简介：赖世雄，男，1948年出生于南京，祖籍广西永淳，赖教授最高学历是在美国明尼苏达大学修得大众传播与英语教学双硕士学位，以及博士班研究。
About the author: Professor Lai Shixiong, male, was born in Nanjing in 1948. His ancestral home is Yongchun, Guangxi. His highest degree is a master’s degree in mass communication and English teaching, as well as a doctoral program in the University of Minnesota.
